Passion on the Web

on May 12th, 2011 at 6:26:28 PM

We are often asked for support from individuals who want a site for their small business or profession.  For most, it  is clear that the website is something they dread doing but know they must.   We encourage them to think of it as a tool to spread the word about their professional passions. What really drives them in their work? What would they love to be focused on?  Suddenly, their eyes light up and their brains begin buzzing.    This is what anyone managing a website should think about - no matter how large or small.  Think about what drives your organization.

Your domain and website files are valuable assets, don't lose them.

Your domain name (mybusiness.com) is a valuable asset, and you don't want to lose track of it or, worse, lose it all together. Make sure you know where it is registered and stay on top of its renewal.  Be careful not to rely solely on your hosting support person for this need. Make sure you understand what is happening to it. Maintaining this knowledge and oversight applies to your website files as well.

The red letter creep

All website developers have their pet peeves.  Mine is what I call "the red letter creep"   You'll recognize a site that has this disease because it's full of glaring instructions for the site visitor who just doesn't get it.

I'm a big advocate for making a site as easy to use as possible but there is a line between ease of use and trying to make sure no one contacts support.  The latter will never happen (unless your site is dead :-)  There will always be people who just don't see the Submit button or can't grasp the concept that you have to click on  a word to download a file.

Adhere to some simple rules to keep your site alive

As your website evolves, it’s important to reassess it continually.

Here is some  advice we give to clients:

1.  Stay focused on your audience and specialty

The Web is a niche medium.  With the tremendous availability of sites, you need to set yourself apart as a site that offers something unique, something that isn’t offered any where else. Focus on what makes you successful off the Web -- and use your site to bring that success alive on the Web.

2. Up-to-date information fosters trust

Continually provide updated and timely information is vital.
