Your domain and website files are valuable assets, don't lose them.

Your domain name (mybusiness.com) is a valuable asset, and you don't want to lose track of it or, worse, lose it all together. Make sure you know where it is registered and stay on top of its renewal.  Be careful not to rely solely on your hosting support person for this need. Make sure you understand what is happening to it. Maintaining this knowledge and oversight applies to your website files as well.

If you don't know the answer to these questions, make sure you find out!

Domain Questions

  1. Where is my domain registered? (This is not always the same as where your site is hosted.)
  2. Do I have the login and password for this account?
  3. Is it set up for automatic renewal and is my e-mail address or my organization's email used as the contact?
  4. Is the credit card used one that I or my organization control?
  5. If I'm allowing someone else to manage all of this, do I have complete trust that the person is professional and will maintain the integrity and accessibility of the domain?

Website File Questions

  1. Are my files being backed up separate from the standard "server" backup that most hosting companies provide?  (In other words, most companies can reinstate your website if their servers lose the site or go down. However, they are not backing up your files so you can access them individually or reinstate a page you messed up. )
  2. Are my files backed up on a different server than my site so, if I can't access the site on my server, I can use the files to post the website elsewhere? (And then point your domain to it as indicated in the first set of questions.)
